Suicide Prevention
Preventing suicide is complex, but it is possible through individual, community, and societal efforts.Â
Raise Awareness: Educate yourself and others about the signs of suicide and mental health problems. Reducing the stigma around mental health encourages people to seek help.
Promote Mental Health: Encourage mental health wellness through self-care, stress management, and healthy coping strategies. Promote a culture of openness and support for discussing mental health concerns.
Offer Support: Reach out to friends, family members, and colleagues who may be struggling emotionally or showing signs of distress. Let them know you care and are there to listen without judgment.
Ask Directly: If you suspect someone may be suicidal, don't be afraid to ask them directly if they are thinking about harming themselves. This can open up a conversation and allow them to express their feelings.
Connect to Resources: Help the person connect with mental health professionals, hotlines, or crisis centres. Offer to assist in finding resources, making appointments, or even accompanying them to appointments.
Remove Access to Lethal Means: If you are aware of someone's suicidal thoughts, take precautions to reduce their access to potentially lethal items, such as firearms, medications, or sharp objects.
Encourage Professional Help: Encourage those at risk to seek professional help from therapists, counsellors, psychiatrists, or other mental health providers. Treatment can be highly effective in managing suicidal thoughts and depression.
Follow-up: Stay in touch with individuals who have expressed suicidal thoughts or attempted suicide. Regular check-ins can provide ongoing support and a sense of caring.
Support Groups: Encourage participation in support groups, both online and offline, where individuals can connect with others who have similar experiences and challenges.
Promote Crisis Helplines: Share information about suicide prevention hotlines and crisis helplines in your community and online. These resources can be a lifeline for individuals in crisis.
Create a Safe Environment: Foster an environment where individuals feel safe and comfortable discussing their emotions and seeking help. This includes workplaces, schools, and communities.
Advocate for Policies: Advocate for policies and funding that support mental health services, suicide prevention programs, and improved access to mental healthcare.
Self-Care: Take care of your mental health. You can better support others in crisis when you are mentally and emotionally well.
